Desserts - Plain Cake

  • 1 cup Crisco shortening (no substitutes)
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 6 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups plain flour
  • Pinch of salt

Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs two at a time, and beat well. Stir in vanilla, flour, and salt; beat well. Pour into a greased bundt or tube pan. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 350º until a knife inserted comes out clean — about 45 minutes. Top will be crusty. Cool before removing from the pan.
The cook says: This recipe has been used for about 50 years — three generations. It is good alone or as a base for strawberry shortcake. Too good to be called plain.
