Old-Fashioned Boiled Custard
|
INGREDIENTS |
- 1 quart whole milk
-
2 fresh eggs
-
1 1/4 cups sugar
-
1 heaping tablespoon flour, plain or self-rising
-
1 teaspoon vanilla
|
INSTRUCTIONS |
Pour milk into the top of a double boiler over warm water and place on low heat. Beat eggs well and mix with sugar and flour until smooth. Pour sugar mixture into warm milk. Increase heat and, using a wooden spoon, continue to cook, stirring often, until mixture coats the spoon, about 40-45 minutes. Remove from heat, strain while hot, and stir in vanilla. Chill before serving with a dollop of vanilla ice cream on top. The cook says, “This is my family’s all-time favorite holiday dessert. With a family the size of mine, I multiply the recipe by four! This recipe was given to me by my late husband’s grandmother in 1938.”
