French Breakfast Puffs

INGREDIENTS |
- 1/2 cup sugar

1/2 cup shortening

1 egg

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/2 cup milk
-
1/2 cup sugar
-
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

6 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted

INSTRUCTIONS |
In a mixing bowl, cream together 1/2 cup sugar, shortening, and egg. Combine flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg; stir thoroughly. Add flour mixture to creamed mixture alternately with milk, beating well after each addition. Fill 12 greased 2 1/2-inch muffin cups two-thirds full with batter. Bake at 350° for 20 minutes or until done. Combine remaining 1/2 cup sugar and cinnamon. Remove muffins from oven; immediately dip tops in melted butter, then in sugar-cinnamon mixture until coated. Serve warm. Yield: 12 muffins. |
