TFC Chief Operating Officer retires

Jim McWherter closes Co-op career after 47 years
12/23/2020

After a career spanning more than 47 years, Tennessee Farmers Cooperative Chief Operating Officer Jim McWherter retired Oct. 23, 2020.

Jim grew up on his family’s farm in Obion County, where his parents, Clifford and Mildred, had a 120-cow dairy. He was the middle child of the family with one brother and sister younger and one brother and sister older. He graduated from Obion Central High School then went on to attend the University of Tennessee at Martin. He graduated with a bachelor’s in Agribusiness in 1973.

Upon graduation, he was hired for the TFC Training Program by Director of Training James Walker. He served at Gibson Farmers Cooperative in Trenton under Co-op Manager Larry Cochran where he worked until 1979. He left Gibson Farmers to become manager at Henderson Farmers Co-op in Lexington where he served until 1985 when William E. Bailey tapped him as TFC general fieldman for West Tennessee. Over the years, the general fieldman position evolved into what is now known as the regional manager role. In 2006, he became customer relations officer and then was named COO in 2013.

Coinciding with his retirement, Jim and wife Sheila celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary in October. They have two children, Brandon and Amy. Brandon and his wife, Angela, have two children: Hannah, 17, and Maddie, 14. Amy and her husband, John Davis, have three children: Tyler, 14, Grayson, 12, and Eli, 10. The families all reside in Franklin, and Jim says he is looking forward to spending lots of time with his children and grandkids. He and Sheila also enjoy traveling and hiking. The McWherters attend Clearview Baptist Church in Franklin.

“It has been a great pleasure to work so closely with Jim over the last several years,” says TFC Chief Operating Officer Bart Krisle. “His efforts have greatly benefited the Co-op system, and I have personally valued his wisdom and experience. But more importantly, I’m thankful for his friendship.”
