Molasses Taffy

Submitted By: Mildred Neely

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • 11/3 cups sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 cup light molasses
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

Instructions

Butter a large platter or an 8-x-8-inch pan. In a medium saucepan, heat sweetened condensed milk, molasses, and salt over medium heat until boiling, stirring occasionally.
Place candy thermometer in pan and continue cooking, stirring constantly, until
temperature reaches 244° or until a small amount dropped into cold water forms a firm ball (about 20 minutes). Remove from heat and pour onto platter.
Let the mixture stand until it’s cool enough to handle. With buttered fingers, pull the mixture until it’s thin and light-colored. Twist into a rope approximately 3/4-inch thick. With kitchen scissors, cut into 1-inch pieces and wrap each piece in plastic wrap.
Yield: 50 pieces or 3/4 pound.
