Preheat oven to 350°. Add shortening, sugars, egg, water, and vanilla to the sifted flour. Beat for about two minutes until smooth. Fold in oats and gum drops.
Drop by teaspoonfuls and roll in coconut, if desired. Bake on a greased baking sheet for 12 to 15 minutes.
Yield: 31/2 dozen.
