Soups - Lentil Stew

  • 5 cups water
  • 1 pound dry lentil
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon each garlic salt, dry mustard, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, and thyme
  • 8 ounces smoked sausage, sliced and chopped
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 1 cup celery, chopped
  • 2 cups tomato juice
  • 1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons barbecue sauce
  • 2 tablespoons molasses

In a Dutch oven or large pan, combine water, lentil, and seasonings. Bring to a boil and then simmer, covered, for 35 minutes. In a skillet, cook sausage, onions, and celery until meat is lightly browned. Add to lentil with remaining ingredients. Simmer for 15 minutes.
