Grandma Russell’s Sugar Cream Pie

Submitted By: Donna Laughlin Blackwell

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 heaping tablespoon flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 cups half and half
  • Nutmeg (to sprinkle on top)

Instructions

Sift sugar, flour, salt, and baking powder into unbaked deep-dish pie shell; pour in half and half and sprinkle with nutmeg.
Bake at 400º for 15 to 20 minutes until filling starts to thicken, then reduce the temperature to 375º and continue baking until filling is thick (total time about one hour).
The cook says: “This is a very old recipe. It was my grandma’s, and she was married in 1905. It’s a lot like chess pie without eggs.”
