Apple Cake with Buttermilk Sauce

Ingredients

  • 13/4 cups fresh unpeeled apples
  • 11/2 cups sugar
  • 11/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 egg
  • 1 stick melted butter
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts
  • Buttermilk Sauce:
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon white corn syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • Instructions


    Chop apples into small pieces. Add sugar and let mixture stand for 10 minutes.
    Sift flour and measure. Add salt, baking soda, cinnamon, and allspice. Sift again and set aside.
    Add egg and melted butter to apples and blend. Add flour mixture and nuts to apple mixture.
    Pour into greased and floured pan. Bake at 300ยบ for 55 minutes.
    To make sauce, place sugar, buttermilk, baking soda, and syrup into a sauce pan and cook for seven minutes. Add vanilla and pour over hot cake.
